The mission of Gilco Transport Services is to provide a quality education program to entry level class A drivers. To accomplish this safety is our main concern!

Minimum Entry-Level Requirements for Truck Driving School

  • Minimum 19 years old
  • Speak, read, write English enough to do your job
  • Ability to safely operate a truck
  • Up-to-date drivers license
  • Have decent driving record
  • DOT physical + drug screening will be administered at no additional cost

Key Rules for Students in our CDL School

  1. If the school is unable to continue CDL training at the school for reasons beyond its control such as, but not limited to hurricanes, floods, extreme weather conditions, fire, etc., then the school reserves the right to suspend training at the Training Site(s) affected for a period not to exceed 120 days. If any student is affected by this clause, the student may return to the school and take the complete Training at no additional tuition charge.
  2. The vast majority of Gilco students enrolled in this CDL training should successfully graduate after completing the Training. However, completion of the schools ELDT program does not guarantee a passing grade on the state written exam or behind the wheel exam.
  3. The school’s resources are always available to past graduates for “Refresher” sessions of training. These services are scheduled through the Training Director and will be scheduled at the discretion and availability by the Director. Refresher training will only be provided to graduates of the actual program they graduated. The school will provide refresher training on a “by the day” basis. The school’s charges to the graduate will be on an actual cost basis. Refresher training costs do fluctuate based on several economic factors. Contact the Training Director, with your specific needs, for a current quote. Active military, that trained and graduated during their military service, may require refresher training upon military separation. If needed, military graduates will be afforded ample refresher training, at no additional charge, provided refresher training is completed no later than 60 days after their military separation date.
  4. Rules, regulations, and policies of the school regarding attendance and conduct during Training are listed in the below pages of this document. Failure to abide with the foregoing rules, regulations and policies may mean dismissal and resultant loss of training as well as forfeiture of tuition.
  5. The student at completion of CDL Training must meet all requirements and be able to satisfactorily demonstrate all equipment and academic skills set forth in the U. S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Pocketbook to obtain a Certificate of Road Test and Certification of Written Examination, Graduation Certificate.
  6. Students understand their driving record may not allow them to attend this school, and if allowed may also be investigated by potential employers.
  7. Student’s signature on the enrollment contract acknowledges training has begun when notified of acceptance by the school.
  8. The student agrees to attend training for any necessary hours during any 24-hour period.
  9. The student must successfully complete the CDL Training phase to graduate and receive the Certificate of Completion and be eligible for the CDL third‐party skills test.
  10. It is the policy of the school to assign work‐study projects to be completed by the student during the evening hours while attending CDL Training.
  11. ALL TRAVEL EXPENSES AND ARRANGEMENTS (TO AND FROM THE CDL TRAINING SCHOOL) SHALL BE PAID BY THE STUDENT. Costs for food, lodging, pre‐employment mandatory substance abuse testing, CDL physical and medical card and personal necessities while at CDL Training shall be paid by the student. It is the student’s responsibility to make their own selection and reservations for their lodging. The school sets no restrictions on where the student secures food and lodging.
  12. Students must have a valid driver’s license that you have held within the last year, when reporting for CDL Training. All students must possess a Class A CDL Permit to operate any commercial motor vehicle. Students are advised that the cost of the written exam, skills tests or any other fees are to be incurred and paid by the student and are not covered by the tuition paid to the school. The student understands that they must be a “Virginia Resident” to apply for a Virginia CDL Class A License.
  13. The student hereby authorizes the school to give potential employers and authorized governmental authorities’ access to the student’s records upon request, in compliance with the Buckley Amendment.

Student Policies

  1. These policies are designed to help the student understand their responsibilities and the responsibilities of the Driving School. Students must be 21 before first day of class, have a reasonably clean MVR, and passed a DOT physical and drug test.
  2. Students are required to pay the full amount for the chosen instruction before the last day of class.
  3. In the event of a returned check, a $35.00 fee will be billed to the student.
  4. If a student starts the class and fails to complete the program. Payment is still required to meet the payment agreement.

Classroom Phase

  1. Students are expected to attend all classroom, and behind the wheel. Students can miss up to 2 sessions. If more than 3 sessions are missed, student will have to retake class from lesson 1. Make ups need to be made up on day class is taught and finished before final is taken. Refer to calendar to check right day and time class is held. *Gilco Transport services reserves the right to make changes without contacting students. Please call and check to see if the makeup will be held on the day you expect.
  2. Gilco Transport Services classes has a scheduled start date. A student that requires additional, driving practice must contact driving school and report on student’s progress every 2 weeks after final is taken.
    If a student is injured before completion of class, we will allow additional time to complete when we have a signature.
  3. Behavior: Students must come to class in appropriate attire and on time. Students will not be allowed to attend class after a delay of 15 min. If a student needs to leave class early, class will not count for that day. Any student being disruptive, insubordinate, or an endangerment in any way to others or themselves will be excused from class and will be required to make that class up at another time. Multiple attempts by the instructor to correct behavior and/or inappropriate behavior in parking area or common area can also cause student to be dismissed from program without refund of tuition.
  4. Graffiti, sitting on chairs inappropriately, writing on tables in classroom or misuse of any of the school’s material or scratching name in bench in the common area will result in a $50 fine or suspension from class.
  5. Intoxicated or drug induced condition. Gilco has a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY on operating CMVs under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If suspected the student will be dropped from the course without tuition refund, and Gilco will notify the FMCSA. The student will not be allowed to re-enroll.
  6. Once a student completes the DMV CDL Class A permit there is no refund.
  7. Students must receive an 80% on all classroom work and drives to pass.
    If a student fails written test, they must come back to Gilco and take a test to finish program and then when they are prepared take the written test at DMV to get license. Current regulations state a student must have permit for 30 days before taking test at Class A road test.
  8. Gilco can provide a truck and trailer for the DMV road test for a fee outline in the student contract.
  9. Course completion will be submitted to the FMCSA TPR after final payment, and fines, and all class session finished and upon completion of the driving phase. Processing time can be up to 5 days. To ensure receiving Certificate, a correct and readable address is required. Gilco Transport Services always requires a current phone number so they can help a student complete any missing information or requirements for completion.
  10. No texting in class allowed. No iPod, recording devices, radios or any instrument or device that distracts the student from the instructor’s presentation are allowed. Instructor will remove offending item until end of class.

Driving Phase

  1. Students are required to sign up for your first drive by the first week of receiving your permit and medical certificate. Drive held after you receive your permit!
  2. Drive time must be scheduled each week except first week.
  3. Students must have their learner’s permit before starting the driving portion and must bring it with them to all their drives. Failure to apply for permit and practice may result in student starting a new class at an additional charge of $75. Cost of not bringing permit to drive $75
  4. If a student is more than 15 minutes late, they will be charged as a “no show” NS fee of $75
  5. Regular shoes for driving no flip-flops. If wearing flip-flops, we will cancel drive resulting in a NS $75 fee.
  6. All drives should be scheduled in class. Check on them at your next class. If you are finished with classroom and still need drives, you can call (757) 650-5730 (Ryan Gilliland) to schedule drive times. Not always available. Use of text encouraged.
  7. Drive Cancelation: If a student is unable to make a scheduled drive appointment, he/she must give 24 hour notice. Gilco Transport Services will take text messages. (757) 650- 5730 Text #. If no notice is given for a missed drive, the student will be charged a (No Show Fee) (NS Fee) $75.
  8. Students are expected to remain at the meeting location for at least 15 minutes after the scheduled drive start time. Students must be sure that you have the correct day and time. Text (757) 650-5730
  9. If 3 scheduled drives are missed without instructor notification student will be dropped from the class and forfeiture of tuition.
  10. Final drive is a test and must be passed with 80%.
  11. Extra driving sessions will be provided for students needing extra instruction. The charge for extra for driving sessions will be $75 per hour.
  12. A student who is involved in an accident will be terminated from the class, if student is doing what the instructor asked student to do, they will go under evaluation process.
